HISTORY

Cavinti is located at the northern part of Laguna with a land area of 25,770.7 or 4 % of the province. It is known as the biggest town of the province. The name of Cavinti came from the phrase, “Kabit sa binti”, it was used by the Spaniards in their wedding ceremony. The groom has to chase the bride to complete the ceremony as their ritual. Until one couple celebrates their wedding, they practiced the ritual and as they ran after with each other, the couple reached the river and suddenly the bride fell into it. The groom and the bride were being pulled by the current, the sister of the bride shouts “Kaka, kapit sa binti!”, and suddenly, the couple survived (www.cavinti.gov.ph, 2014). The cave was formerly known as the Kuwebang Puti which is located at Sitio Malaysia, Brgy. Paowin, Cavinti, Laguna. Department of Environment and Natural Resources personnel discovered another mouth of the cave last May 24-27 year 2011 and they called it the Cathedral Cave. The cave was classified by the DENR CALABARZON Regional Cave Committee as Class II last December 12, 2012 and can be open for caving or eco-tourism activities with restrictions to protect and prevent damage to the cave ecosystem. The name of the cave, Cavinti Underground River and Caves Complex was named and approved by the Sangguniang Bayan (www.facebook.com/CavintiCaves). Cavinti Underground River and Caves Complex is new in the industry and still lacks marketing strategies like having official website for their place to be known and have easy access with the public. They also don’t have other page aside from Facebook to visit on by the tourists who are interested with their place. Cavinti Cave also needs a lot of requirements to prepare and achieve to gain tourist satisfaction and be known to the public.
